Tip rhinoplasty is a procedure that refines the shape and direction of a blunt, low, upturned, or drooping nasal tip. Since the tip of the nose has thick skin and is greatly influenced by the shape and strength of the cartilage (alar cartilage), techniques that involve bringing the cartilage together, lifting it, or reinforcing the support structure are commonly used rather than simply raising it. In such cases, the patient’s own cartilage is often preferred as a graft material; ear cartilage is frequently used because it is elastic and retains its curvature, while septal cartilage or rib cartilage may also be used. There are two main approaches: making an incision only inside the nose or opening the columella to gain access; the open approach is typically considered when significant structural changes are required. If the skin on the tip of the nose is thick, changes may be less noticeable, and swelling tends to last longer, so it takes time for the final shape to settle. The decision must be made within the context of the nose’s overall balance, and results vary significantly from person to person.
